Roland Henry Stock was born on January 6, 1889, in Deerfield, Michigan, the son of John L. and Julia (Brinker) Stock. In 1913 he began working for the United States Reclamation Service in St. Ignatius, Montana. His first assignment was doing a survey of the land flooded by the Kicking Horse Reservoir, east of Charlo. He later worked on other projects.
